How safe is your business?

Over the past two years, workplace safety has referred to disinfection and keeping your distance. However, protecting yourself, employees and customers from accidents and injury is just as vital as safeguarding everyone’s health. A good workplace safety program can even increase efficiency, help employees be more productive, reduce turnover and create a more positive work culture. Here are some safety tips to review for your business.

Check Your Surroundings

Even if you don’t run a business that operates heavy machinery, hazards are everywhere. Be aware of changes to your environment and mitigate any potential risks. Things to look out for include tripping dangers like cables or worn-out flooring and rugs (slips, trips and falls are the most common type of workplace injury), overheated tech devices (check for dust-clogged fans, or machines with fans that don’t have enough space to cool down and older systems that may need maintenance or replacement), and overloaded storage spaces – make sure falling objects aren’t an issue.

Keep Proper Posture

Of course, there’s the old saying “lift with your legs…” and this is good advice when carrying any kind of heavy object – especially if you aren’t used to it. But it doesn’t take much to throw your back out and we all know the pain and distraction that comes with it when you’re hurting. Even sitting at a desk or standing at a counter comes with its own risks. Products that help encourage good ergonomic posture can help employees avoid back problems, neck and leg pain, or even carpal tunnel syndrome.

Encourage Regular Breaks

Although breaks may not be mandatory or feel like a necessity, they can actually reduce mistakes in the long run. Working without breaks can lead to tired, lethargic employees. Taking a few minutes to yourself to refresh can keep workers more alert and in the end, able to complete tasks with fewer errors and ultimately keep them safer and even more productive.

Post Clear Instructions

Creating a safe-forward work environment is key to keeping safety at the forefront of everyone’s minds. Giving clear-cut instructions around your safety policy and providing a good example for employees are great first steps. Lastly, ask employees to report any safety concerns they notice and take quick actions to mitigate any issues that arise.
