Improve Video Calls with your Workspace Set Up

Video calls are great because you get to see the person you’re speaking with and you can share your screen for a more powerful experience. Just like in-person meetings, there’s etiquette to follow when meeting online. With a few upgrades to your space, you can enhance the experience for both you and who you’re meeting with whether you’re in the office or working remotely. Here are our top items you need for a great video call experience.

Mount Your Webcam

First things first. You’ll need a webcam if you don’t have one or if you don’t like the quality of the webcam built into your computer. Make sure you can mount it at eye level or a little higher so you look your best in your meetings. Chat with your office supplies dealer about your desk set up to find the right webcam fit for you.

Find Your Comfort

It can be distracting if you’re moving around a lot when you’re on a video call. Think about what the most comfortable setup would be for you – is it sitting? Standing? A combination of these two? Make sure your desk and your chair help you feel supported enough to sit or stand through an important meeting without having to fidget in order to get comfortable. If you’re standing, look into adding an anti-fatigue mat to your set up so your feet don’t get tired if a meeting runs long.

Shine Your Light

Consider upgrading your lighting. No one wants to see your backlit silhouette when chatting online. After all, the whole point of video calls is so you can let your personality and expressions shine through. Natural light is best, but you can’t always depend on the sun to do its thing when you need it to – so get a desk lamp or floor lamp that you can adjust to shine toward your face when you’re meeting.

Design Your Background

Many video call providers offer different virtual backgrounds you can use instead of your own, but there are mixed reviews on how these function. We prefer to tidy up the space behind us so there aren’t any distractions. Like any office, it’s nice to let your personality shine through. Hang framed diplomas, wall art, awards and photos. Make sure you open your webcam and check to see how your backdrop looks while on a call before you start placing shelves and hammering in nails.

With the increasing popularity of video calls and video conferencing it’s important to maintain professionalism in the workplace. Use these four tips to help create a productive space for video calls.
