When T.J. Monachino founded Speedy Office Supply in 2012, he likely never imagined it would grow into one of the largest independent dealers in the country. Fourteen years and 23 acquisitions later, United Business Supply (UBS) is one of the leading office and facility supply dealers in the United States, built entirely without outside capital.
UBS now operates four distribution hubs across Ohio: Bedford Heights, which serves as its headquarters, along with locations in Youngstown, Toledo, and Mansfield. From these hubs, the company delivers throughout Ohio as well as into Pennsylvania, Michigan, and West Virginia.
The company’s product mix has grown right along with its footprint. UBS supplies traditional office products, office furniture and design, food service and breakroom products, janitorial supplies, safety and PPE, as well as free shredding services, custom printing, and more.
“We bought all types of businesses to get the experience needed to support our entire customer base,” Monachino says. “Our job is to be the one truck that shows up with everything a building needs to run.”
That broad offering is backed by the personal service that comes with being an independent dealer. UBS has an 11-person customer service team, dedicated stocking arrangements for customer-specific inventory, and certifications, including SBE certification, that support public-sector and institutional bidding.
So, what’s next for UBS?
“More of the same,” Monachino says. “There are still great independent dealers out there whose owners want a good home for their customers and their people. We want to be that home.”
